March 30: The Main Thing

"And Samuel went no more to see Saul until the day of his death. Nevertheless, Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel."

1 Samuel 15:35

Saul was the first king of Israel. He was a man who had everything in the natural that qualified him for the throne. The prophet, Samuel, was led by God to find him, prophesy to him, and to anoint him as king. Despite the prophetic confrontation between Samuel and Saul, Samuel had a profound love for this deeply flawed king.

Saul disobeyed the prophet’s words because of the peer pressure and popular influence of the opinionated crowds. When Saul was confronted and rejected as king, he begged Samuel to spare him public embarrassment by coming and worshipping with him before the elders and all of Israel. Saul’s security was in his position, so God took what he loved away. Saul’s first priority should have been to please God, not the people.

This devastated Samuel, and with a broken heart, he wept for his loss. God had not rejected the person Saul, but rather his position. Be cautious.

Do not chase the ministry for public praise. Obedience is better than sacrifice.

“A position will not keep you – your performance will.”
