April 26: Broken and Spilled Out

"And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He [Jesus] sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head."
Mark 14:3
At the time of Jesus’ anointing by the woman, the chief priests and scribes were plotting to kill Him (Mark 14:1), and Judas was conspiring with them (Mark 14:10). Is not that true in your life? When you give your greatest sacrifice, is it in the middle of your greatest trial?
This costly perfume was spikenard extracted from a root native to India. It was such aromatic oil that in order to retain the fragrance, it was sealed in a small alabaster flask made of marble. To release the aroma of the oil required breaking the long neck of the flask that contained it. Perfume that was preserved in alabaster was considered to be the best. The value was indescribable; spikenard was a family heirloom that was passed on from one generation to generation, from mother to daughter.
This anointing was a clear act of pure devotion to Jesus.
Those who were present were extremely critical, accusing her of being wasteful and foolish. Jesus’ rebuttal justifying her action was because of its significance with His approaching death and burial. Unaware of what was to come; Mary simply gave because she loved Jesus. You may not know why, but in your greatest hour, your greatest gift will bring your greatest anointing.
“When the fragrance of fellowship is present, the nature of Jesus changes yours.”
