April 22: Submit to Resist

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

James 4:7

James was recalling Proverbs 3:34 that says God opposes the proud and delivers great grace to the humble who desire God more than their own desires for pleasure. When you resist the devil, you gain God’s favor through wholehearted devotion and avoid His rejection. James suggests that it was the spiritual unfaithfulness that brought the devil’s influence (James 4:4).

James says, submit to resist. These two words are commands in the Greek which call for an immediate response. It is a pointed and forceful way to demand action. In other words; rather than resisting God’s will for us, we should, “resist the devil”. The promise that “he will flee from you” assures us that as powerful as Satan may be, he can be resisted.

Through your submission to the Lamb, you silence the lion.

The source of power to resist is not in fighting the devil – it is in submitting to God. Are you tired of the devil messing with your business? Your peace? Has he crossed the line in your life? You don’t need to fight him; you just need to fall on your face in prayer to God. Your greatest battles are won when you worship God. Worship your way out of your trouble.

“Submission means to surrender your will, which leads to obedience."
