May 30: Looks are Deceiving

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”"

1 Samuel 16:7

Samuel was directed by God to go to the house of Jesse to anoint the next king to replace Saul. After observing Jesse’s stout and robust sons, God rejected them all. Confused and distraught, Samuel questioned Jesse, “Is this all your sons?” There was one more, a young boy in the field tending sheep. Samuel requested his presence so they sought after David.

If Samuel was confused by God’s rejection of the other sons, he was about to be surprised all the more. When David was brought to Samuel, he found a young, small in stature, red-haired, fair-skinned boy with freckles (1 Samuel 16:12). According to 2 Samuel 17:25, David had two sisters who were daughters of Nahash. David’s mother is unknown and not mentioned by name. Some scholars have suggested that David’s mother gave birth to his brothers conceived with Jesse, but that David was not of Jesse. The DNA of David and his physical features were not common in Israel.

Whether David was an illegitimate son or not, he was physically challenged in a day when all those in his country were dark-haired and dark-skinned. David was an outcast, an underdog or the “least likely to succeed in his class”. Have you ever felt unqualified? Do you feel like you cannot accomplish anything for God because of where you have come from?

Let me remind you that God has anointed you for something only you can do.

Regardless of where you have come from, you have a future!
