November 23: Giving Thanks

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."

Philippians 4:6

Anxiety weighs us down with the worries and concerns of this world. What can cause us to feel this way? Bills. Wayward children. An undependable car. Careers etc. The word for “anxiety” in Greek means “to have an unhealthy heaviness or fretfulness.” The Apostle Paul was cautiously confronting the Philippi Christians to trust the Father fully. God was listening to their prayers and petitions.

The cure for anxiety is prayer. It’s not just any prayer, but a petition coupled with thanksgiving. The Greek word for “thanksgiving” is “eucharistias;” it’s where we get the word Eucharist. It is associated in many traditional churches with Holy Communion. It comes from the well-known term “charizomai” (its root is “charis” meaning gift); the word is a verb that denotes gratitude from receiving a gift.

To give thanks when you pray means you are grateful before you receive a tangible answer. You trust the source. You know that God will not only hear but also answer.

...And then God stepped in.
