December 7: A Lamp

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Psalm 119:105

The context of the cry of David’s heart is in relation to his life being threatened by a former friend, now foe. David’s life is in turmoil, and he feels hard-pressed. His life, or world, is filled with darkness and uncertainty, and struggle.

In a world where it is easy to be led astray into darkness, David looks to God’s Word as a source of light as bright as the morning sun that burns away the darkness of the night.

In the following verses, David states that he has taken an oath to follow God’s commandments, even though he has suffered much. David pledges anew his reliance on God’s Word, His way, and His precepts. Now he asks God to renew his life and his strength. Too many times in life, we try to go through the struggles of life alone, on our own power and strength.

Let us be more like David, who, although he was anointed to be king, never became proud and arrogant; he always remained humble before the Lord and proclaimed his reliance on God.

Humble yourself before the Lord, and He will lift you up
