The Kingdom of Light

“So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.”

Colossians 1:10-13 (NIV, 1984)

Whatever the time of year, most of us love the little, white LED lights strung around trees, porches, restaurant verandas, and the eaves of homes. Light is so connected with life, joy, and hope. Even the tiniest lights have the capacity to change the character of surrounding darkness.

Today’s Scripture reminds us that light—pure, divine, heavenly, eternal light—is part of our inheritance as sons and daughters of God. Paul writes of “joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.” We have left the darkness behind us!

We don’t like gloominess, shadows, and dark corners, because we are children of light. It’s a reminder that whenever we sense discouragement or depression casting shadows over our soul, we must immediately turn to the Light himself. Seek his face in the Word and in wide-open, heart-felt prayer. Bask in his radiant presence. Let his light become yours again.

Lord, how wonderful to be a child of the Light. Even in this dark world, with so much heartache and evil, you have given me the privilege to shine. I pray that your light in me—my countenance, eyes, words, smile—will be a sharp contrast to the cynicism and negativity of those who don’t yet know you.
