January 29: His Presence

"God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us."

2 Corinthians 1:3,4

These are tough times. Whatever your beliefs and your politics, it has been a brutal time all around the world. In the face of difficulties like these, our answer as Christians is the same as it’s always been—the presence of God.

God is the God of compassion, who comforts us in our troubles so that we can comfort others. His presence, through the Holy Spirit, is our greatest resource. I can’t even tell you how many countless times I have been comforted by God’s Word. It is the most stable, consistent thing in my world, and even when heaven and earth pass away, the Word of the Lord will remain forever (Luke 21:33).

Listen to how God describes the Bible: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12 NIV).

God’s Word is alive and powerful because it is not just words on a page—it is God-breathed and full of His Spirit. You read it, but it also reads you. How?

The Bible contains God’s presence, and He uses it as an avenue to share His presence with us.
