February 16: Take Time to Listen

"The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice."

Proverbs 12:15

Relationships are incredibly rewarding, and they require a lot of work. We have a tendency to believe that because we are in the same room with someone that we are “present” with them, spending time with them.

Unfortunately, we can be in proximity to someone, and not actually communicate that we are “with” them. When your spouse, child, or dear friend needs to talk, create a safe environment for them. Turn off the TV (or turn it down). Put down the gaming system, computer, or phone. Give the person your full attention.

Don’t minimize how important your role is, or the effect of focusing your full attention to them will have. When we choose to become present in the moment with another person, they feel heard and cared for.

It’s been said that women often complain that their husbands take them for granted. Husbands, in turn, complain that their wives nag and ramble on, taking forever to get to the point. Few motives in the human experience are as powerful as the yearning to be understood. Being listened to means that we are taken seriously, that our ideas and feelings are known, and, ultimately, that what we have to say matters.

Take the time to truly listen to your loved ones today.
