They said to Him, Lord, come and see. 35;Jesus wept. 36;Then the Jews said, See how He loved him. 37;Some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, also have kept Lazarus from dying? Resurrection of Lazarus 38;Jesus, deeply troubled again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid on it. 39;Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the man who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, the man has a stench by now, for he has been dead for four days.” 40;Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41;Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man had been lying. Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.” THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Numbers 15-16 Mark 6:1-29 A tragedy left a family with an irreparable void. A little girl ran across the street while chasing a cat and was run over by a truck. The other daughter, four years old, watched in silence and stupefaction as her parents clung to the lifeless body of her little sister. For years, the petrifying loss of that moment enveloped the family in sadness. The feelings disappeared. The only consolation was numbness. There was no relief imaginable. Writer Ann Voskamp was that four-year-old, and the sadness surrounding her sister's death shaped her perspective on life and God. In the environment where she grew up, there was no grace, and joy was a concept with no basis in reality. As a young mother, Voskamp set out to discover that elusive thing the Bible calls joy. Joy and grace come from the Greek word, and Ann discovered that it constitutes the essence of the concept of thanksgiving. To test her discovery, she decided to give thanks for 1,000 gifts she already had. She started slowly, but soon, gratitude overflowed. Just as Jesus gave thanks before raising Lazarus and not after (John 11:41), Voskamp found that gratitude brought feelings of joy into her life that had long since died with her sister. Joy springs forth from giving thanks. The joy of living springs from a grateful heart. RUBÉN
